FAK containers comprise the consolidated shipments of a number of suppliers and buyers, packed into one container by Freight Forwarding companies. Customers utilise this type of service when they do not have enough product for export to fill a 20’ container. By having a Freight Forwarder act as their export agent, suppliers and/or buyers can access competitive freight rates and shipping knowledge. Forwarders are able to compile the necessary Customs, Quarantine, Legal and Shipping Line documents required to complete an ocean freight shipment. They can also arrange for the pickup, storage and packing of your products, and its delivery to your buyer.
Provided a customer’s shipment is small enough to fit within a standard freight container, it can be shipped in an FAK container. You will need to decide if it is more cost effective to ship your freight with a Forwarder, or to book a container directly with a shipping company like PDL. You must take into account the size of the parcel of cargo (the freight rate is charged in dollars per Revenue Tonne*), the commercial experience of your company and your ability to complete the necessary regulatory authorities’ documents. Please be aware, there are a number of charges other than the freight rate applicable in the shipment of any cargo. PDL recommends strongly that you make yourself aware of all associated costs of transport before initiating such a move.
NOTE: * A Revenue Tonne is the larger measurement for a freight item in either Cubic Metres or Metric Tonnes. (Eg: A crate of 2.5 CBM and 1.5 MT = 2.5 RT)
In this example the client will be charged a freight rate per Rev. Tonne x 2.5)
The size of a shipment determines its suitability to FAK handling. Any of the above items can be carried as FAK. However, the client must first determine the commercial viability of using this type of service.
Commonly shippers of high value, low volume goods are attracted to FAK shipment.
Items such as boutique wines, student personal effects, small appliances and electronic components could be included in this category.
